  • 17 July 2009: Hittle Grove cemetery, historical burial site of the Orndorff - Albright massacre of 1860, is located in Tazwell County Illinois. ..About the massacre:..On the morning of the 12th of Oct. A.D. 1860, the husband and father in whose memory this monument is erected, was called away on business, from his residence three miles southeast of Delavan, Illinois. He left his family, consisting of his wife and two small daughters. When he returned, no little ones ran to greet him, as was their custom. This caused alarm for the welfare of his dear ones. Entering the house, he found his wife and daughters, whom he had left in perfect health and joyful spirits a few hours earlier. They had been murdered while he was absent. They were now lying prostrate and weltering in their blood. The mother and younger daughter were already dead. The older daughter was still living and moaning piteously but unable to whisper one word to her father. At four o'clock the next morning, death ended her suffering. Kind friends carried them in one coffin, to their last resting place...The murderer was a former hired hand. As he was robbing the family. He killed them in order to cover up the crime. He was later found hiding in a corn crib in Logan County and was returned to Pekin where he became the first man to be hung in Tazewell County. .
