  • 06 October 2013:   Ernie Pyle Memorial near Dana Indiana on Rt 36.  Ernie Pyle was a famous war correspondent during World War II.  He was born of tenant farmers and later attended the University of Indiana majoring in Journalism.  He worked for a few newspapers in Indiana before joining Scripps Howard and becoming known around the world for his journalism work in the war.  Ernie was killed April 18, 1945 near Shima Okinawa, the victim of Japanese machine gun fire.<br />

It was built over Big Raccoon Creek in Bridgeton in 2006 to replace an original bridge which was destroyed by arson in 2005.  It was completely rebuilt private funds. The bridge has a 245' span.  The original bridge was built in 1868 by J.J. Daniels and was 261' in length.<br />
<br />
Bridgeton Mill is thought to be the 2nd oldest continuously private operated mill in the United States.  The mill was built 1823 and rebuilt in 1870.  The mills foundation is actually part of the dam, the water fall is 200' wide.  The mill currently offers cornbread, pancake miss and other 100% stone ground products.<br />
