08 February 2013: 2013 Mazda MX-5 Miata roadster automobile. Chicago Auto Show, Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA), McCormick Place, Chicago Illinois

2013 MAZDA MX-5 MIATA: Since the Mazda MX-5 Miata first debut at the Chicago Auto Show (CAS) more than 20 years ago, this pure sports car continues to be the segment-defining roadster. With more than 900,000 units sold, the MX-5 is the best-selling two-seat roadster in the world. For the '13 model year, which is the third and current generation, the MX-5 wears an updated rendition of the original long, lean and supplely rounded body. Trim levels comprise the entry Sport, luxury-loaded Grand Touring, and in between those two, the all-new Club trim that replaces the previous Touring package. All 2013 MX-5 Miata models receive a fresh new front fascia, with fog lights and new 17-inch alloy wheel design on specific models. The thrilling growl when the ignition key is turned to start, comes from the MZR 2.0-liter DOHC four-cylinder. That engine produces 158 horsepower when equipped to the six-speed Sport automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted dual-paddle shifters, and 167hp with the manual gearbox. Either set-up is geared toward the joy of uncomplicated driving that is focused on the occupant behind the steering wheel. Sun worshipers have their choice of two distinctive and easy-to-operate roof covers. Standard is the Z-fold design soft top, and an available power retractable hardtop, which outsells the soft-tops by a 4:1 ratio worldwide. Mazda cleverly timed the opening-and-closing cycles for the hardtop at 12 seconds, which coincidently, is "faster than the never-convenient red-light-green-light pause." The top itself descends into a cleverly designed storage well, yet leaves the 5.3 cubic feet of cargo space completely untouched.
