08 February 2012: 2012 NISSAN LEAF: As a 100-percent electric powered, medium-size hatchback, the Nissan Leaf is based on a lithium-ion battery-powered chassis, and offered for 2012 in Leaf SV and Leaf SL trim packages. The battery powers a high-response 80kW AC synchronous motor, rated at 107 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, which drives the front wheels through a single speed reducer. When equipped with a quick charge port and using a DC fast charger, the Leaf can be charged up to 80 percent of its full capacity in 30 minutes. Charging at home through a 220V outlet takes approximately eight hours, and the Leaf has a range of 100 miles on one full charge to satisfy real-world consumer requirements. The advanced lithium-ion battery pack carries an industry-competitive warranty of 8 years or 100,000 miles. Now in its second year of production, the Leaf’s latest features include a photovoltaic solar panel spoiler that supports charging of the accessories 12-volt battery, and an “Approaching Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians” system. The Leaf offers comfortable seating for five adults, and with the 60/40 split folding rear seat lowered, 24.0 cu. ft. of cargo room.
